Apparently 10.5.6 is a bit larger than the earlier versions 10.5.0-10.5.4 and requires a few more hoops to jump through to get it to load. If you get this during installation, then check your installation DVD or USB flash drive. I know that you are doing the 2 USB install making your 10.5 disk with transmac. Your idea of booting from a different drive with Lion on seems like a good one.

You may want to do a search of the site and see if any of those have already answered your questions. Disconnect all external devices and see if you can discover which one is causing it.
