Apparently 10.5.6 is a bit larger than the earlier versions 10.5.0-10.5.4 and requires a few more hoops to jump through to get it to load. If you get this during installation, then check your installation DVD or USB flash drive. I know that you are doing the 2 USB install making your 10.5 disk with transmac. Your idea of booting from a different drive with Lion on seems like a good one.
You may want to do a search of the site and see if any of those have already answered your questions. Disconnect all external devices and see if you can discover which one is causing it. I have never heard anything about rBoot before.. maybe you can add it to the proper boot plist and see if it helps.. But the weird is that Chameleon does not "see" anything installed on the other hd (ie, the harddisk without a chameleon partition).
